How do i make my laptop's video card work?

I've got a PC video game and everytime i load it it says ';Freelancer does not recognise your video card so your video output might encounter problems'; and when i play some parts of the screen kinda splatter across the screen, is there anyway i can set my video card (whatever that is) to work? or change the settings or something?How do i make my laptop's video card work?
