I'm upgrading my video card from a GeForce4 MX to an AGP 8X card. Do I need to physically remove the old card?

Also, do I need to go into the BIOS and change any settings? If so, how is this procedure done?I'm upgrading my video card from a GeForce4 MX to an AGP 8X card. Do I need to physically remove the old card?
If it is Geforce4 MX integrated, you can not remove it. It is part of the chipset. Just plug in the AGP card. BIOS will do everything automatically. BUT you need to load the driver of that new card. This might be of help:

How are you going to to replace the old card if you don't remove it? Of course you have to physically remove it, the same as any component. The only exception would be if you had an onboard graphics chip, in which case plugging a card into the AGP slot should automatically switch the onboard chip off.

You shouldn't need to change anything in the BIOS but then it sounds like you have a really old system, so who knows.
What he said, you will have to put the card in the computer, but it is not terribly difficult. Unplug the computer first, please, we hate to lose questioners.

No bios adjustments should be necessary, but you will probably have to load drivers. The video card probably comes with a CD,

Does anyone know how I can change a video file from Quicktime to Windows Media?

I have a Spanish video project and I'm trying to put it on a cd.

well I did but it turns out that the computers at my school dont have Quicktime. So, I need to find a way to save it from Windows Media Player.

I don't have the original card from the camera we recorded it on(a regular digital camera...if that matters..) but i have the cd of the video saved in Quicktime.

I only have VGA port on my computer's video card How can i?

How can i change it to DVI?

I have both a DVI and VGA port on my monitor and i want to hook my computer cable into the DVI port of the monitor, and my gaming system cable into the VGA. But my gaming console is VGA and so is my computer cable.

I want to hook the computer up to DVI. How would i be able to do that?I only have VGA port on my computer's video card How can i?
They make a converter, but you won't see any difference. It will still be a VGA signal. You need a video card with a DVI output to see any real difference in screen quality.I only have VGA port on my computer's video card How can i?
You can buy converter cables that convert DVI to VGA, but not VGA (analog) to DVI (digital). Since you can't change your gaming system, you could buy a new video card for your PC that outputs in DVI and you'd have a solution that way.

However, even if you do that, your monitor will not actually be able to display both devices at the same time anyway. It might have some sort of auto-sensing switch inside that jumps between devices automatically as you turn them on/off, though.

You're better off spending your money on a simple ';KVM switch'; available at any computer/electronics store (either retail or online). http://www.radioshack.com/product/index.

What Video Card is Compatible with my Desktop PC?

Hey, Everyone, I was thinking of upgrading my Video Card on My Desktop PC, I was just wondering, How I would know what was Compatible with my System? I have:

HP Pavillion s3323w Slimline

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 4800+ 2.50 GHz

Memory: 1gb

--------------------------------------鈥?br>

I don't know what's Compatible, or what Works with it, it's got an:

Name: NVIDIA GeForce 430

Chip Type: GeForce 6150SE nForce 430

DAC Type?: Integrated RAMDAC

Memory: 313 MB

I don't want to go too Expensive, but not too cheap, any Advice?

Can this Video Card even be changed? - Thanx in Advance, MicahWhat Video Card is Compatible with my Desktop PC?
Sadly your choice are really limited, first by size, second by power.

Size - You can only use low-profile cards in the miniture case, these are not common for high power cards, have a look at the X1600 model

Power - Your power supply wont be able to pump enough power needed for a high end card, even if it can, the case wont ventilate enough heat to stop it from cooking the inside. What Video Card is Compatible with my Desktop PC?
PCI-E
usually all you need to do is check if the card you are buying it's compatible whit your operating system could be vista or xp etc, etc.

then just choose how much memory you want on the card

i recommend 1GB,another thing you need to check is the power supply so you can know how many watts is the maximum that you have, sometimes you need to change the power supply for one that can give enough power to the system.

usually you need more than 500 watts depending of what card you get

ask at the store or read the box so you can see how many watts do you need to feed the card and the system, or you may burn the motherboard.

once you resolve this issue just open your case insert the card in a pci slot and install the software that came whit it.

now you are asking if the card can be even change, if it is integrated on the motherboard, when you put the new one the one you are using will be disable.

if it's not integrated just remove it from the pci slot and put the new one.

Which videocard would increase my FPS?

I play normal games counter-strike source, gmod, half life 2,dod source, you know? all those.

so basicly i was thinking about changing video card or graphic card or something. But i dont how how to put or which one to get.

Any help?

Currently i have Driver: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 3650 on my PC.

Am a real player but i dont buy the new ones, like cryses, cod and so on.

I want a good graphic card but im not planning in get any new futuristic games, i just like having a good fps. How do i install a driver or craphic card or whatver anyway?Which videocard would increase my FPS?
Hi,

Yes, a new vid card would make a difference as you have a radeon mobility card which is not as good as a standard card.

However, the mobility range is normally used on laptops, is that what you have?

If it is then you can't change the card as it is a resident chip soldered to the motherboard.8-((

Perhaps you could add more memory?

ArnakWhich videocard would increase my FPS?
About all you can do is reduce the resolution and lower the game settings. You might be able to download newer drivers for it.

It's an integrated graphics chipset that is part of your laptops motherboard, it can't be changed.

How can i switch from agp to pci without accessing bios ?

I recently bought a pci video card to replace a bad agp card. agp card is now completely blown out so i'm getting no signal to my monitor disabling me from changing video settings in the bios.

is there another way instead of swapping my new pci for another agpHow can i switch from agp to pci without accessing bios ?
Take out the AGP card. The motherboard will automatically see the New card and allow the display to be shown through it. Its relatively simple to take it out too.How can i switch from agp to pci without accessing bios ?
If your motherboard slots are AGP, then the PCI card will not work.

PCI only works in PCI and AGP only works In AGP.
Ya, take out the AGP card, return the pci card you got if you still can, and get yourself a replacement AGP card. PCI is ancient and SLOOOOOW. If you want any sort of 3d performance, you need to stick with an AGP card. PCI will function.... but its so slow if you are wanting to game or anything like that, you do not want a PCI card.
Your motherboard will take care of this for you.

What is a good temperature for the 8800GT Video Card?

How Hot can this Video card be? I just overclocked this card from the stock 600mhz core clock to 700mhz so i can Play Crysis WH in high settings. temperature ranges from 70-75 Celsius; it changes depending if there's to much action in the game.

Can this Card handle this temperatures without giving problems? So far everything runs stable. Or what should be the temperature for this card? What is a good temperature for the 8800GT Video Card?
Company line is it's rated up to 100c (Celsius) , but not something I would want to stay at for too long. Up to 80C, I would start to worry about. 85C would be my red-zone. If 75C is your load temp, it's no problem.

Roger, on another question you asked: Your hardware will support both 32 bit or 64 bit Vista. However, unless you intend to run 64 bit games, you will get no benefit. Also some 32 bit applications will not have all the features in 64 bit as the do with 32 bit. 64 bit Vista will not make your 32 bit applications run better. As an example, MS's own Office Suite software will not perform all the applications it does on 32 bit. I would not upgrade to 64 bit Vista based on your current requirements. Spend your money on something else or save it for something else in the future.

I hope that helpsWhat is a good temperature for the 8800GT Video Card?
The cards are fairly durable. 70-75 is on the hotter side. My GTX will run that, but the two cards are very different.

What type of case cooling do you have?
75 degrees under load i.e. playing crysis are good temps!! Remember graphic's cards are designed to run alot hotter then cpu's. If however you wish to lower it while gaming download rivatuner an adjust your fan speed before you start gaming. I personally would not bother though.

How to change video files into quick-time?

now how do i do that without downloading anything because this is my mom friends computer[shes 19] and i need her permission and she says it could damage the computer and also without anything also cause i don't have a credit card or anything card besides an school id card and no one in my family has an credit card either so any help or hints??How to change video files into quick-time?
Well if you mean when you double-click the file, it will open up in Quicktime then you should have quicktime installed already. Then all you have to do is right click on the file, then choose Open With..., then you just have to choose Quick time player from the menu! If you want all the video files in a certain format to open like that then tick the message on the bottom that says to do that! Make sure you right click on the video file, it makes it easier. Good Luck

How can i increase the memory of my ipod video with out changing the memory card?

my friend claims he can increase his ipod video from (30) to (60) gig without changing the memory cardHow can i increase the memory of my ipod video with out changing the memory card?
first of all, there is no ';memory card'; in the video iPods, it uses an internal 2.5'; hard drive. By memory card you are implying that the iPod Video uses Flash Memory (which it doesn't) There is absolutely no way to increase the 30GB to a 60GB without having to open up the iPod and replace the hard drive for the higher capacity one. Even if you can ';hack'; the internal HD so that it belives it is of a higher capacity, I haven't seen a lot of that going around, and the most you could probably get is a 4KB increase in space. Therefore, your comrade lies.

-Disappointing I know, but its the truth ;-)How can i increase the memory of my ipod video with out changing the memory card?
yeah...tell me how that turns out
There is no wat to do that. You need to get a bigger ';memory card'; in the iPod.

How do you upgrade your ram and video card for better performance on the PC do I have to go and buy stuff?

I play the sims game and I want my computer game to be faster and it says to have a bigger RAM and a good video card or something and I dont know if this is something that needs to be installed or do i have to make changes within the computer to do so.How do you upgrade your ram and video card for better performance on the PC do I have to go and buy stuff?
You would have to purchase new components to upgrade the RAM and video, although it really depends on what kind of computer you have now. Most desktop computers do have expansion slots to upgrade, but some don't. Some computer motherboards have integrated audio/video/network components that should be disabled if you're going to upgrade. The form factor of your board could also be an issue. Check with the manufacturer of your computer to see if this is an option or if you have a custom made computer, get in contact with whoever built it. Some parts houses will install your hardware for a fee, so if you're not familiar with hardware installation, I'd recommend you have someone do it for you. Also, check your SIMS game to see what the recommended computer hardware configuration is. If your computer is upgradeable, make sure whatever you buy matches that. Good luck. How do you upgrade your ram and video card for better performance on the PC do I have to go and buy stuff?
Not knowing what your current system is wont get you a very good answer!
It depends on your mother board. If it's at its full capacity, you may not be able to upgrade it.

You should check your motherboards or computers user guide. They usually tell you how to upgrade properly, including what parts you need.
If it's a laptop, you can upgrade your RAM but not video card. If it's a desktop, you can upgrade both RAM and video card. I recommend at least 1GB of RAM and at least a 256MB video card.
You have to go buy memory/ram and other hardware on your own.

This is all providing your PC can be upgraded.
yes, it's something that needs to be installed.

You'll need to go out and purchase more memory and a better video card than what you have now. You'll need to know the specs of your current configuration before buying anything new.

I suggest you have someone who knows about compeuter, check it out for you.
the ram are cards you install inside the computer if it has spare slots if no spares replace what is there with bigger ones you kind of need to know what you have to make sure you are getting the right ones as far as the video card it too is just going out and buying a better one and installing it
You need to make changes inside. Buy another graphics card (be careful to check the type you have installed now - AGP or PCI-E in order to buy 1 with the same interface), and also buy another RAM module (check the type you've got before u buy - DDR or DDR2).

Just to tell you yesterday I've upgraded my RAM and Graphics Card! :)
What you need to do is find a friend that knows the 1st thing about computers and ask him to help you.

How do you know when a video card is about to die?

I have an nvidia video card. My last one lasted about a year before it stopped working. This one I have had a little over a year and now started to see lines at the top of my screen. I haven't changed anything recently...How do you know when a video card is about to die?
I suggest downloading the latest drivers for the card. Make sure the fan on the card isn't full of dust and that you don't have a PCI card directly under it obstructing airflow to its fan.

A video card should last for years. If you're going thru one every year make sure you have an adequate power supply, especially if you upgraded from onboard graphics to a card because if you don't your video card(as well as the other devices) will not be running at 100% efficiency which could result in what you're seeing on your display and the video card, as well as other components, may fail. Also make sure your case fans are working and arent dusted up too. If your display does this as soon as you start your puter up it would probably be drivers or underpowered power supply. If it starts happening after machine has been on for a while look for overheating issues. You may want to try your monitor on another puter too to make sure it isn't the device that's ailing and be sure your connections are tight. There are progs that you can monitor the temp of your card and adjust the speed of the fan on it. you may have it on your machine or you can get something like Riva tuner to do it with. How do you know when a video card is about to die?
Video cards shouldn't just go out like that. You may need to have your PC looked at for cooling problems. Your system internals may not be cooled properly, causing failures.
Normally they don't die it is more likely your monitor cable. It may have been bent so that he internal wires are now broken. If you still think you need a new card, you might want to look at this site:

    http://www.gamegiants.net/index.php?cPat
The card will likely die all at once, so the lines you're seeing on your screen is probably NOT due to the card.

Take out the card and clean the edge connectors, as well as the socket on the motherboard, with either an air blast, or contact cleaner, both are readily available at your computer store or Radio Shack.

Try and re-install your graphics driver and see if that clears up the problem.

As the previous poster suggested, you may then want to check the integrity of your physical connections - the connector, the cable, and even your monitor.

Change out the video cable ( you can borrow one from a friend for a few hours ). Then try changing monitors.

If all that fails to solve the problem, then you may have to try installing a new card.
They are called 'Dead Pixel Lines' I had the same problem a long time ago. The problem is with your monitor. It needs to be replaced!

    Thanks

DillonHow do you install a new video card my laptop??
Unfortunately, with laptops, you are generally stuck with the built-in hardware since it is soldered onto the motherboard. So if you don't like the graphics chip set, then you are out of luck.

Your only option typically is to locate and download new drivers or software for the graphics chipset.

Usually you can just do a search in your favorite search engine using the chipset numbers and the maker to find the site with the drivers or software that you need.

Good luck! How do you install a new video card my laptop??
    Dillon:

Sorry. the graphics chip is soldered directly to the mobo, so it cannot be replaced. It would be cheaper to get a new laptop rather than fix the old one.
Unfortiunatly, notebook graphic cards are the most difficult things to change in refrence to other things that you can change, such as RAM, Hard Disks -- etc.

This is because they are really tied into the motherboard of the notebook. In order for them to function well enough, but be small enough to be in a notebook computer, they need to be really dependant on the Motherboard. If you have a graphics card that is compatable with the exact same motherboard as you have in your notebook now, And you have a motherboard where you will be able to even take out and replace the graphic card (which is unlikely unless it was a notebook specifically made for high performance gaming, and even still its extremely rare) then you will be able to change it. However, most notebook motherboards are designed with the graphic card as a packege, so they typically are connected together at the circuits, which I would assume would take extensive knowledge in soldering together motherboards to replace a graphic card. So basically, the graphic card is enfused into the motherboard of most notebook computers, and it is impossible to change them.

An alternative would be an external graphic card which connects by USB

It would just be easier to get a new laptop. If you replace the motherboard, then you need to replace the memory because chances are, the memory won't be compatable with the new motherboard. You also would need to replace all the other things that are not compatable with the motherboard, like the dvd/cd rom, and the way that the laptop connects to the fold up screen, and also certain motherboards don't even fit in the body of the laptop in terms of screw holes and stuff.
Sorry, I don't think you will be able to install it yourself, as you said, today on laptops they are all integrated. My laptop has dire warnings all over the place not to open the case. I have a ';NVIDIA'; graphics chip and I don't have a clue what that even means, so what do I know?
Not possible. You'd have to replace the motherboard.

As said above, video card name and model no and what windows operating system you are using we need to know...

Tell us as additional information to question like Computer name and model no (if from standard company like dell, hp etc) %26amp; window operating systemGive that info to us and we will try to find video card info.

No need to buy anything....just tell us the above information and we will help you.How do I get software for my video card?
First of all, you need to know what graphics card it is. Due to your refusal to tell us what operating system you are using, giving detailed instructions of an easy method is impossible. However, there is always the foolproof method of opening your case and reading the label on it.

Once you have that, you can go to the manufacturer's website and grab a copy of the drivers and any other software needed.
i dont understand what kind of problem you have... you mean the refresh rate is low? if its that then about 80% its because of your monitor and you should find your monitor's driver.

for see your computer hardware details you should:

right click on your My Computer%26gt;Hardware%26gt;Device Manager

How to upgrade if my video card integrated with motherboard?

Did I need change my motherboard only? How to upgrade if my video card integrated with motherboard?
You have to purchase a video card from a computer store and then install it internally.

It should be PCI-E as a slot since it was made like 3 years ago. If it's older, then you have a slow processor which wont be good for gaming or photo editing. How to upgrade if my video card integrated with motherboard?
No if you want to upgrade video card you just plug it in not new motherbard is needed
You'll have to add an external one if your board has AGP or PCI-Express Slot for Graphics Card.
Depending on the age of your board, you can get either an AGP or a PCI/e graphics card to install.

Go here and download the advisor, it'll tell you what expansion ports, if any, you have...

    http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
First thing that you need to do is to check the manual of your mother board if it has an expansion slot available for upgrade.

Check if you have the AGP or PCI-Express slots as there are 2 types of video card slots out in the market today. AGP is used mostly for older types of mother boards, while PCI-Express is mainly used in newer boards.

Once you've determined if a video card expansion slot is available and what type then you can purchase the video card on your favorite computer store.

also when buying a new video card, determine first what type of applications will you be using, like if your jsut gonna use them for games, of for heavy graphics designing, etc.
Most motherboards, even with integrated graphics chipsets, will still have a PCI-E slot. You can upgrade it as you would with any other motherboard.

this applies to most modern motherboards made after 2006-07.
most boards since 95 have had the ability to install a graphics card

which replaces the inboard graphics adaptor

    AGP

    PCI

    are the 2 types

get the Motherboard manual and check which you have

if you don't have a manual look in system info and it may provide motherboard info

or simply open the box and look on the motherboard for a number

Today I tried playing a game that I have played everyday for the past year, but it wouldn't start and I received this error message:

    ';Failed to initialize window. Please try running the game again. If that doesn't help try changing the screen resolution and color depth. If that fails, then your video card does not support this game.';

It worked perfectly yesterday. I tried all those things. Any other ideas? How do I solve a video card error?
    1. Restart your computer (this will reload your drivers if they are there)

    2. If #1 doesn't resolve the problem, then you may need to reinstall or update your video card drivers.

How can I change a computer monitor to ';Negative mode';, the display will reproduce as a photograhic negative?

At one time had software that controlled my video card and everything changed into a ';negative mode';. For example if I had a JPEG of a real photographic negative it would appear as a positive while the rest of the screen was a negative. I do not want render a negative mode - just change the display in real time. I think the software may have been from Tiawan, I could change the color balance, gamma, refresh rate and timing of the monitor. among other things. The software was also popular with gamers. How can I change a computer monitor to ';Negative mode';, the display will reproduce as a photograhic negative?
http://www.luminous-landscape.com/reviewHow can I change a computer monitor to ';Negative mode';, the display will reproduce as a photograhic negative?
Try with Adobe Photoshop. It's really works.
The monitor or display of a computer is the primary user interface. Monitor problems are some of the most common computer problems since the voltages inside a monitor can be as high as 10 KV. Many of the problems can be fixed yourself by simply changing the settings. Detailed instructions available at http://fixit.in/monitor.html

    What graphics card/slot do I need ?

I want to get a Nvidia 8600 video card or higher, to play CSS %26amp; COD4. But i've realised most require a PCI-E slot, I only have a PCI slot =[

Would it be better to get a compatible video card or change slots ?

If change slots, how can I change from a PCI to a PCI-E ?

If get a different card that is PCI.... which cards would be best, that are of the quality of a Nvidia 8600 ?

    Thanks!What graphics card/slot do I need ?
PCI and PCI-E are totally different slots. You need to change your motherboard to one that has PCI-EXPRESS 16 slot for VGA.

If your motherboard doesn't have PCI-EX16, then it must have AGP 8x graphic card......and that's pretty old. Plus, Gefore 8600 needs at least 400w of power supply ( I think, ) so you should consider getting a brand new computer with duel processors.

Conclusion : Just getting a new vga won't work, regarding your current computer. Get a new computer or do not get anything at all. What graphics card/slot do I need ?
you can't ';upgrade'; a PCI slot to a PCIe slot. you can only aquire a new PCIe slot by replacing your motherboard. And naturally that would lead to a new CPU and RAM. Harddrives, disk drives, sound cards can probably be saved and carried forward.

any PCI graphics card you get to use your old regular PCI slots will be dino-rific antiques for your needs. If you have an AGP slot...you can get a lower-end (but current) graphics card for that, that MIGHT squeeze you past minimum system requirements. but it won't be pretty.

My computer cant detect cd rom but bios can?

it used to work before. it was working until i changed my video card. when i changed the card and opened my pc, my computer didn't detect any cd roms but the bios can. does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem? My computer cant detect cd rom but bios can?
    Depends.

Your Optical drive could be shot, but the firmware onboard it might respond to the BIOS... meaning that as far as the BIOS is concerned the drive works, but as far as windows is concerned, it is dead.

    OR

It might be an Upper Filter installed in the drivers, typically left behind by iTunes. You would look at the driver details in the properties of the optical drive in Device Manager, providing it shows up in Device Manager.

    OR

You could have blown a capacitor or three on your motherboard.

But no matter what it *could* be... what it DEFINITELY is, is time to bring it to a repair shop. Let someone who knows what they are doing, take a look at it.My computer cant detect cd rom but bios can?

By a mini do you mean a slim line? Those things are nearly impossible to upgrade. You needed to post the make and model of the HP computer so it can be looked up. You might be able to fit what is called a HALF HEIGHT card into it. This kind of card is usually small and half the height of a normal PCIe x 16 card so they can fit into microATX chassis or some of the mini towers. No guarantee tho, without knowing exactly what make and model of HP you have. But at least this gives you a clue of what you might want to investigate.

If you bought a separate video card, from XFX or EVGA, etc. it should have came with one. There is also a cable for them. ATI Card overclock question?

i have just changed my video card in my computer and i went in to the ATI Catalyst Control Centre and i went to the overdrive where the little sliders are to overclock you card and i would put a setting and tested it and it would say Passed so i would press accept and i would look at the current settings section it would still be at the stock settings. how do i make it so that it stays at the settings i put it at? thanks..ATI Card overclock question?
The programs they give you usually never work try overclocking it from bios.

if you manage to OC it from bios it boots then you open a benchmarking game like crysis and it dosent crash or freeze or get the bsod(blue screen of death) just make shure you have good airflow and maybe consider a new heatsink and fan for it.

how ever if dosent boot or if it freezes by itself or in game its probably your power Supply not being strong enough to handle the OC explaining why the program never worked

How can i download a driver for my new video card?

i have a barely used video card from my brothers old computer which he broke.(the computer) the video card on my computer is out dated and doesn't work that great. i need to change them but it requires a new driver. but if i put in the new videocard to download it i wont be able to see the screen. what can i do? its the ATI raedeon x1300 video card. How can i download a driver for my new video card?
If you are running windows XP, it has a default video driver which will allow you to see the screen, just not use the full power of the graphics card. Install the new card, then download the driver. Or, you can download and extract the driver, and then install the card. When the computer prompts you for the driver, just point it to the folder you extracted it to. Lastly, you can actually have the old card in while you install the new card. Plug the monitor in to the old card, set up the new card, then remove the old card and plug into the new card.

    Driver page:

    http://ati.amd.com/support/driver.html

If you are running XP, this is the page to download the driver specific to the X1300:

http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyHow can i download a driver for my new video card?
go to the manufactures site, usually in the support/download section the site you will be able to select your new video card and download its latest drivers, unless you have a random unnamed one goodluck
if it is new it should have come with a cd - the cd should have the driver on it. If you can find it.

switch PC on again you should see the screen work else somming in BIOS not set right go back and fix BIOS settings else if screen shows up the grapix card is working and installed just needs driver now in windows and you set to go , hope this helps youHow do I disable my onboard video card?
Going to need a bit more info

Is this a home build or name brand?

What motherboard are you using if it is a home build?

    What is the onboard graphics?

What graphics card are you using(new one)?

    What OS?
If you have the monitor plugged into the new card, then that is the new card it is using. Most computers are designed so that if they detect a new video card they automatically disable the onboard video. Normally you do not have to do it by hand.

Normally to disable the onboard card you have to go into the computers BIOS set up. That is done by pressing a key or key combination (F2 for Dell) at the first screen of the boot up. Normally the screen which tell you which key(s) to press.

As each computer system board's setup program is different, I can not tell you where in the set up you will find the option to disable the card. You will have to hunt.

You may want to check the setting for the new card to be sure that you have enabled memory sharing and/or have it set at the maximum amount, as the is usually the cause of a slow video card - not enough memory.
You should only have to go to the device manager (right click my computer, click properties - go to the hardware tab and click the device manager button). Click the + on display adapters, then right click the one you're disabling and select disable. Is it possible you've got the monitor plugged into the wrong port? Since you've got two video cards, you may be plugged into the wrong one too.. Your adapter should have come with instructions on disabling the other adapter or making the one you've installed the default.
Is your monitor plugged into your new video card yet?

How do I find out what kind of video card I have?

http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?dCan someone tell me how to configure how much RAM my video card uses?
your video card uses ram according to what you are doing that requires it. If you have ram issues then eigther up the memory in your computer, aquire a bigger video card or both.
Is the video card integrated on an AGP or PCIe interface? Look for AGP Apeture size in the bios, or anything along those lines. If there is a setting in the bios then it should be plain as day.

What should I do to fix my computer? Replace the video card?

My screen is displaying vertical bands and line over everything, which flicker and change colors. The mouse also leaves pixellated trails behind when it moves. The monitor is fine, I tried another one and still had the problem. When I jar or move the actual computer though, the lines change radically, so I'm assuiming its a hardware problem. My question is, what should my next course of action be. Should I replace the video card? How?What should I do to fix my computer? Replace the video card?
In my opinion it certainly sounds like a video card issue.

If you are comfortable with opening the case the first thing I would do is look at is the card itself. Be sure to unplug the power cord and touch some metal on the case to ground yourself then visually inspect the video card to ensure it is properly seated in it's slot AND that the power cable (if your card needs one) is properly seated, maybe even try a different power connector. I would also look at the connection between the monitor and the card to ensure it is not loose (the cable might not be plugged in completely OR the connector on the card might actually be coming lose from the board).

On my systems I always put the part in a know good system and put a known good part in the problem system before calling said part dead. I've seen hardware do strange things for no reason at all in some machines.

If all else fails... You'll get to have a smokin' new video card! (Go ATI)What should I do to fix my computer? Replace the video card?
If i was you, I would use trial and error, I would take out the video card, replace it with another one..

and I would test it out if it keeps flickering or not..

if it does not flicker at all, then your In luck.

How do I get better resolution on my HDTV using my ATI 9700 computer video card?

Ok, Here is what I got. I have an ATI Radeon 9700 video card, in a computer that I built using spare parts from my friends Alienware. I have it hooked up via S-Video cable to my TV which is a Samsung 50'' LCD HDTV. My problem is that even though I am running the latest drivers, the resolution on my TV image (which is a clone of my desktop) is just terrible. I have a friend with a RCA LCD 52'' hooked up in much the same way ( except he uses VGA, an option I don't have), but his picture is crystal clear. Is there a setting I can change to repair this? Or is my friends LCD just a better TV for this type of connection? Or are my dreams of having as crystal clear 50'' HD image to play Call of Duty 3 on just a bit too lofty? Should I try to upgrade to Vista (grrr) or just stick with XP Pro? Any advice, good or bad, would be much appreciated. Thank you!!How do I get better resolution on my HDTV using my ATI 9700 computer video card?
First of all, I would recommend making your computer's video resolution the same as the native resolution of your TV. Generally the resolutions are 1280x720 for a 720p TV and 1920x1080 for a 1080i/p TV. If you using a different resolution your TV is having to scale its display to match that resolution. Another thing I would try: use component video cables or DVI to connect to your TV, if that is an option on your video card/TV. They will provide a higher quality picture than your s-video cable. How do I get better resolution on my HDTV using my ATI 9700 computer video card?
Your problem is the S-Video connection. this is stuck at a 480i connection as that is the S-Video standard.

Your TV has to have a better way to connect to qualify as HD. You may need to get a video card that has a suitable output to match the TV's input. You will get the best picture from a DVI - DVI link, or HDMI to DVI, if your TV has DVI or HDMI inputs.

Do not upgrade to Vista, it is a video hog and a resource hog in general. It is also rather flakey.

How do I strech my Samsung HL-5667W to fill 1920x1080?

I'm trying to hook up my brand new MCE computer to my 2-3 year old Samsung 56in DLP. When I get it setup at 1920x1080 resolution the screen doesn't scale to fill the TV.

I'd like to use the HDMI input on it since the TV's VGA port is limited to 1024x768 resolution. I can get the computer connected and running at 1920x1080 res, BUT theres about 2inches of screen on every side thats not getting used. :(

I tried the aspect scaling in the nvidia drivers but no matter what setting I changed it to Ithere was no change.

Its a Geforce 8500 GT video card, HDMI, DVI, all that on it. TV model is HL-5667W. I've also tried my laptop and I get the same results, so changing video cards or computers makes no difference.

How to resolve the MTXPard blue screen problem that some Matrox users experience?

if i want to use my dvi connection from my lcd monitor to my video card do i have to change anything in my video card set-up?

how do i maximized its used?

wat is the difference between dvi and vga in terms of quality? how do i maximized it?

wat resolution is ideal for 19'; widescreen lcd?

    sorry for so many question.

    pls help.

thanks in advance.I bought a lcd 19'; widescreen monitor and 256 nvidia video card, i want to use the dvi connection.?
If you have a DVI output on the video card and a DVI input on the monitor, then just connect them via a DVI-D cable. If you are buying one you only need a single link cable.

Ideal resolution for a 19'; widescreen is 1440 by 900.

You do not need to do anything else to get the system to work.

DVI-D should be better than VGA because it is a direct digital link.

For VGA the system sends out the video information it converts it from the digital signal inside the video card and sends it as an analog signal, clocked by the pixel clock. However that pixel clock is not sent with the data.

When the monitor gets the signal it has to then sample it and convert it back to a digital format to display on the screen. But since there is no pixel clock information it does not know exactly where to sample the signal. Usually the monitors do a good job estimating where to sample, but sometimes the signal drifts or it estimates wrong and yiu end up with a blurry or jittery image.

DVI-D is digital in the PC to digital on the cable to digital in the monitor. (usually) a perfect signal transfer. No sampling errors no extra noise, no ghosting or ringing form the cable. No conversion errors in the D to A and the A to D converters.I bought a lcd 19'; widescreen monitor and 256 nvidia video card, i want to use the dvi connection.?
Your monitor or your gfx card shoulda came with a removeable switch u can take off for DVI, look on the back of your PC and see if the monitor runs straight into the video card or if theres an inch long adapter on it, remove it and u'll have DVI.

DVI is like Hi-def, and VGA is like standard, since your monitor is HD compatible.

I use 1280x1024 as it looks the best and is well spaced out.

How to add a video card in a laptop?

I'm thinking to add a video card in my laptop that is (Windows 98). Where i have to install or i have to change the motherboard. What I have to do. Tell me more about it.How to add a video card in a laptop?
Every answer so far has missed a very critical point, you can't add a video card (or upgrade the video card) in a laptop. And no, you can't change the motherboard in a laptop either. With a laptop, hardware wise you are stuck with the motherboard and video card that came with it. Now, you can upgrade the hard drive and memory. Besides, even IF you could add a video card to the laptop, if it shipped with Windows 98, it has to be at least 6 years old, if not more. I know what desktops were like back then and I know in their default configuration they wouldn't have a prayer of playing any modern game and that would not improve with the addition of a video card due to processor and memory limitations. The same is true even more so for your laptop. The answer is to buy a new laptop and I happen to like this one (though I don't know what kind of budget we are talking about here), http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asHow to add a video card in a laptop?
    go to best buy..

they will do it for you
cant.. need to buy new lap
It will cost you a lot less buying a newer one! Changing the video card is possible (but not the motherboard!!!).
You might want to totally upgrade your laptop to Windows XP, so that a video card that gets installed will work. I doubt Windows 98 will support certain video cards, and I also doubt someone will want to work on a Win98 laptop. Sorry!

Right click anywhere on your desktop Properties-Settings-Advanced-Adapter will tell you make and model of your card or the chip set if it's integrated graphics and how much Ram it's has or is using

You can't upgrade the actual card you can only upgrade the drivers ... and if it's working there's not much point in that

It's a laptop som it's almost impossible to upgrade your actual card (if you have one) and Imposible to upgrade if it's integrated ... and videos will adjust themselves ... you can't always get ';full screen'; you'll just have to live with the black band top and bottomHow do I see what video card I have and where would I go to upgrade it? • How do you change a video file type without corrupting it?

I put my phone's SD card into my computer and was trying to make a movie on Windows Movie Maker and tried to import a video to create the movie, but the movie was the wrong file type. I changed the last few letters (example .3gp to .wmv) of the file and it seemed to work, but when I pressed the ';import a video'; button it said the file ';could not be imported. The selected file is not valid or is corrupted';. Help! How do you change a video file type without corrupting it?
You can't change the extension of the file to convert it. The extension is just a way for your computer to read the type of format the file is in. If you want to change the file type, you have to download a converter. For example, if you wanted to make an .3gp into a .wmv, you could search yahoo/google for ';.3gp to .wmv converter'; then use that. How do you change a video file type without corrupting it?

How do you change your settings to your new graphics card?

i bought a new graphics card for supreme commander i checked it and it has all the requirements for the game but it still says your video card does not meet minium requirements. So im thinking that it still is reading my old internal graphics card. any ideas how to change it without uninstaling my old one.How do you change your settings to your new graphics card?
    EDIT:

Well if you don't disable the onboard graphics then it will never use the new descrete graphics card....which means it's useless.

You need to disable/shut-down your internal/integrated graphics in order for your new add-on graphics card to work. Usually whenever a motherboard detects a new graphics card is installed, it disables the integrated graphics automatically...in some cases they don't.

Here are the Steps on how to install a new graphics card and disable integrated graphics:

    1. Go into ';Control Panel'; --%26gt; ';Device Manager'; --%26gt; ';graphics Adapters';

    2. Next, right click ';Graphics Adatper'; and click on ';Disable';. You are now ready to install your new graphics card.

    3. Turn off your system and insert your new graphics card. Plug your display cable into the graphics card.

    4. Your system should detect the new graphics card. Insert the driver disk to install the drivers for your card. I would recommend that you go to the graphics card developer site (nvidia or ATi) and download the latest drivers instead. The included drivers are usually outdated by several months.

    * everything on your screen will be...large the first time you turn on your computer after installing the new graphics card because it does not have any drivers. After install the drivers it can then be adjusted.

Is this guy using video editing to do his card trick?

I know this guy from school, and I've seen him do some pretty cool (but relatively simple) card tricks in person, but I think he might be using video editing in his video to change the color of the deck.

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HnF3bNhau

I know he says he doesn't use any video editing, but what do you think?

If he didn't use video editing, how do you think he did it?Is this guy using video editing to do his card trick?
I think it was legitimate, as there can be a few different ways that can be done. I can see how it could have been caused by the bicycle cards friction trick, but that's all I'm going to give away. ;-)Is this guy using video editing to do his card trick?
It looks legit. He probably was switching the cards while he was hiding them with his hand. Classic misdirection illusion. He's good though.
I think it is def legit...

although there is a possibility it was edited I highly doubt it.
    This is totally real.

I do not know of any program that could do something like that, and even if I did know of one, I wouldn't have the slightest idea how to change the color of the cards. I can totally see how he did it, but I'm sure there is no video editing involved. =)

How can I change the power supply on my pc?

i got a Gateway DX4720-03 and i need to change the video card ...i was thinkin of nvidia 9800gt but the 512mb one is more expensive than the 1gig :l anyways answer that if u can..to the real question...can i change the power suply on my pc...if so does bestbuy do this?both video card and power suplyHow can I change the power supply on my pc?
You should be able to change ur PSU.

I would not purchase it at bestbuy as they will rip you off (most likely). They would install it for you (The Geeksquad department for a fee) You can always install it yourself. Most of the plugs are self explanitory. If are not experienced with computers, here's a tip, note down every plug you yank out (just write it down each one where you unplug from the mobo, hard drive etc)

    Try www.newegg.com

I have purchased this recently and there is 79.99 after a 20 dollar rebate

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asHow can I change the power supply on my pc?
if that card is compatible with your motherboard then all you do is take out the screw holding it on then pull it out of the slot and put the new one in. Its about as easy as you can possible get! and the power supply is about as easy but you have to make sure the main wires to your motherboard are compatible with the connections there, which it should be if the computer is a recent one. Then you unplug the power connections to the motherboard and everything else, unscrew the screws holding the power supply to the frame, slide it out, slide the new one in, put in the screws to hold it on, plug the wires where they are supposed to go, and then it works! Just get a power supply that supplies a little more power so you can plug more stuff in! Its reeeeeally simple!
Checking out your specs these are the upgrades for your model:

You can change the power supply, Yes. I dont know if best buy does this, but maybe geek squad can do it for you.
its just some screws, take them out your self and mount your new one, and make sure to connect everything back
It's a good thing that the 512 is more expensive than 1 GB model!

U can get a powerful graphic card with 1 GB at cheaper price.Forget about the 512 model.

In order to remove the power supply:

-Look at the back of ur casing

-ur old power supply must at the top.(near the power cord)

-u will see some screws which maintain it.

-Use a screw driver to remove the screws.

-Pull the old power supply out.

-put the new one in the same place as the old

    -Use the screw driver again.

U can do this process by yourself. No need to be computer literate!

    Peace!

Advice on a good graphics card?

I don't play the latest and greatest high-end games. My most demanding simulator (train simulator) recommends a 128MB video card (Geforce 4 equiv.) Direct X 9 or higher.

So basically, I have this motherboard: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/docum

It looks like I'm going to need a PCI Express X16 video card. I'm looking to upgrade my power supply to at least a 500 watt, and possibly a 650 watt ATX soon, which should be enough to power that card? I'm running on a Pentium Dual Core E2140 processor, and RAM (PC2-5300) will also be upgraded to about 3 or 4GB (currently at 2GB). No current crazy upgrades that would zap the power other than when I change the video card.

I need a decent card that is at least 128MB. I really like NVidia...but don't know a lot of recent info about which of their cards are good, and which aren't. I work at a retail store that has a 512MB PNY GeForce 8800GT PCI Express x16 for $100. We're closing down, so the price is dropping somewhat rapidly and will probably be down to $50 or $75 in the next day or two. Before that, it retailed for about $200+. But the question is...just how good is this card? Should I just wait and get that, or order online?Advice on a good graphics card?
PNY is not considered highend nvidia stuff... stick w/ evga or BFG in my opinion but the 8 series should suit you well...Advice on a good graphics card?
OK, well first off, does your case have low profile expansion slots? This is a very important factor. If not, you don't seem like a really serious gamer, so you don't need to blow your money on an 8800GT or the likes. That game/simulator has ridiculously low requirements, so there's no need to go overboard. I would recommend an ATi HD 4670. Its a decently powerful card that can really blow your socks off, for $70. You probably wont need to upgrade your power supply with this card, it uses very low power, and I even use it to play many demanding games, Like COD4, Crysis and the like. A GeForce4 card is from 2002, so any modern video card will suffice.

If you need a low-profile solution, I recommend the ATi 4550 ($50) or NVidia 9400 GT ($50-60). I know you may like nVidia, but they really don't have any cost effective mid-range cards right now. Your best bet is sticking with the ATi 4000 series. They are dirt cheap, and boast great performance, superior to nVidia in all levels.

Oh, and lastly, it really doesn't matter what company manufactured the card too much. They just supply the memory chips, and cooling equipment. I would STRONGLY SUGGEST NOT PURCHASING THE 8800GT!!! It uses too much power for such a little system.

    Cheers!

Oh, and PLEASE tell me what case you have. I cant advise you to buy a Power Supply without knowing what your case is. Trust, me, I can help you find whatever you need.

Oh yea, you could probably run all of your simulators on your motherboards integrated graphics, it dishes out 256 megs of memory, so you should be set even with that. the intel 3100 Integrated graphics aint half bad for your purposes, and itll save you alot of money and grief.
Well, if you have a slimeline, then the card won't fit. I see your board is micro ATX, so you must have a small case(unless HP just made a bad decision). Like I said, an 8800GT won't fit in a micro ATX case. I suggest this low profile 9600GT for a slimeline case-

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as

Oh, and the 8800GT is a good card. I have one it and it can run just about every game.
ah i c. The 8800 GT is extremely noisy and heats up very quickly. So are you looking in the $100 range? If that's the case, then ATI would make a better selection as they have lower prices, with a decent quality. But if you were an extreme gamer, you should look towards Geforce GTX 260 ( i love it) No lag at all, running crysis with 40fps!

sorry, i was talking about the 8500 GT i had a year ago.

I've change my resulotion and the screen went black I restarted the pc same How can I get it back?

I was using my video card vga cable connector, I've restarted my pc and the screen stayed black , then I took of my video card connected my vga cable to the motherboard vga connector and it works fine I tunned of the pc plugged in the vha cable to the video card and the screen went black , my questiong is , is there any way I can change the video card resulotion without having it plugged in ?I've change my resulotion and the screen went black I restarted the pc same How can I get it back?
If your computer always restart, There are some reason:

    I. It's Hot in There

Sometimes this can be caused by an overheating situation. Itunes, RealPlayer, Windows Media player, etc. require a lot of processing power to decompress and decode music files, which can cause the processor or hard drive to get hot.

    Memory Fails Me...

If you determine that overheating is not the problem, the most likely suspect is bad memory.

II. Don't Do Me Any Favors

There's a setting buried in Windows XP that tells your computer to restart when a system error occurs. you turn off that option, you may solve your automatic reboot problem.

    1) Click Start, then open Control Panel

    2) Click Performance and Maintenance

    3) Click System

    4) Click on the Advanced Tab

    5) Click Settings in the Startup and Recovery section

    6) Uncheck Automatically Restart in the System failure section

Note that this may prevent the system from restarting, but it can also mask the true problem.

The most common cause of computer restarting is a corrupt registry.

Most likely your registry is bloated and overstuffed with an assortment of useless pieces of data. The operating system while running your computer has to pick its way through all this excess material. There will be bits of programs which were not completely uninstalled, parts of programs which were never completely installed, fragments of miscellaneous data, useless drivers, and a multitude of other bits and pieces.

The answer is to clean your registry and remove all the material which is not needed.

    http://fix-pc-freezing.com/Clean_Up_Cent

Get the best one, and completely clean your windows registry with a few clicks of the mouse.

    III. Computer Restarts After Download?

This can also be a virus or spyware problem. I suggest you go through your Control Panel / Add or Remove Programs list and remove any programs you don't need, then run thorough anti-virus and anti-spyware scans. See:

    http://fix-pc-freezing.com

How to switch from integrated video to video card?

I think my integrated video on my 4 yr old gateway desktop is going bad. It does have a slot for me to add a video card. If I had the new video card, will the pc start using the new card by itself or do I need to change a setting somewhere? I don't play games and just plan on buying a cheap 2 D video card. How to switch from integrated video to video card?
no just turn off your computer and then put in the new one, turn on your computer and done, your up and running with you new graphics card. but i recommend to buy a new computer because your computer might not be able to handle the new one.How to switch from integrated video to video card?
yes it will as long as you plug the monitor to the new card. you should check the system requirements on the card you want to buy to make sure you meet them, once you install it you can disable the old one by going to control panel, system, hardware properties, device manager, display, right click on the old one, then disable, and that should do it.
yeah your computer should start using the video card you buy, just make sure you install the drivers and plug your monitor into that video card.

You can disable your integrated video card by going to the device manager.
I suggest you start your computer. When your Windows O/S is running, go check out your email, or something for a few minutes. Let the program 'warm up'. (Actually it's the hardware inside, and Windows)

Now close your browser, and go back to just the desktop screen.

Install the CD that comes with the video card. The CD contains the drivers, and other associated software needed. (Best thing to do However, is to consult the Quick Install Instructions that come with the vid card. This takes precedence, over anything I print here!)

Follow the instructions on the cd.

    Now close this window when done. If it asks you to restart your computer, or gives this option, DON'T! Click on 'Restart Myself', or 'Restart Later', or whatever. You want to turn the computer off, not restart! Shut the computer down normally. (Start%26gt;Turn Off Computer%26gt;

    Shut Down)

When the computer is off, unplug it from the AC source of electricity.

Unplug all cables. (Power, ethernet, monitor, mouse, etc.) Open the computer. (Work on a table) Lay the computer on it's side. (You can lay a towel down to keep from scratching the table, or your computer)

Lay the computer down so that the side that is up, is the open side. ('Natch!) Touch the metal frame of the computer case. This simple procedure, will alleviate your body of static electricity. Your body contains static electricity. Static will burn out your delicate computer hardware components, in a New York minute!

With the computer unplugged you're safe. With you touching the metal frame of the computer case, the computers safe!

Now take the vid card out of it's protective anti-static bag, and install it.

Refrain from using a magnetic-tipped screwdriver. (You'll need a Philips screwdriver)

Making sure that you haven't accidentally jostled any cables loose from the hardware components inside, or that any ram sticks have been jostled loose, close the computer case.

Plug all cables back in. If you simply pulled the power cable out of the back of the computer, STOP! Unplug this cable from the surge protector. Plug it in the back of the computer. Now plug it in the surge protector.

If you do it the other way, there is a chance of a voltage spike!

Sometimes Yes. Sometimes No. Why take a chance?

Make sure you plugged the monitor into the vid card, and not back into the I/O area where it was before! (I/O=Input/Output. This is the area where your mouse, keyboard, etc., plugs into)

Wait one minute, after plugging the power cord back into the power supply, in the computer.

    Now turn the computer on.

Sometimes if you install the graphics card,(Video card. Same/same),

BEFORE you install the cd with the drivers, Windows selects a generic driver of it's own. Windows will select a driver that it thinks matches the vid card. This=NO! You will have a conflict!

    Windows: ';Hmmm, no drivers? I'll just match this one to it. What the heck! '; ';Wait, a minute! What are these drivers that have been installed now? Which ones do I USE?';

Edit: Doing it this way will force your BIOS program to change the settings for video. From integrated, (Or Onboard), to PCI, or AGP, or PCI-Express. Depends on what kind of graphics expansion slot ,your Gateway model uses.

Unscrew and/or unsnap the old video card from the PCI slot by lifting up on it by the ends. Set aside.

Carefully remove your new video card from the anti-static bag making sure not to touch the gold pins.

I need to find cheap ram for a laptop

I have a Latitude C360 (old) and i can't change the video card.

So, i heard if you buy more ram you can get the video card memory up.

The memory card is 16mb of memory, and i need 64 - 128mb of memory. Can you tell me how much ram i need, and a cheap price.I need help finding cheap Ram for a laptop?
I did a Google search for your laptop, and couldn't find your model. Make sure it's right first before you go off and buy something that might not work.

You can use the Crucial Memory tool from their website (www.crucial.com) to find what you need, but often the price on what they have in stock is much more than other sources.

Just by buying more RAM though you won't increase the video card's memory. You can allocate more RAM to the video card, which can be a hassle. Since your laptop likely uses DDR ram due to it's age, 1GB of the speed you need could run anywhere from $30 to $70 depending on the specifics of what you need.

It's not really worth it to spend that much upgrading a computer that you likely couldn't sell for that price.I need help finding cheap Ram for a laptop?
    crucial.com
i would check at micro center they have all kinds of stuff and answers to all cp problems and they are normally cheaper than anywhere else.
Go to the Crucial website and check there. They have your laptop model and let you know the maximum capacity of memory it can hold. It will also sell you the right model chip for your laptop. Most you'll spend is about 30$
    go to newegg.com
I wouldn't buy it from Crucial- too expensive... ram for old systems often costs more than ram for newer models (don't know why). Do this: go to Crucial's website and enter your EXACT model- it will tell you what ram your laptop takes and how much. Then go to ebay- I guarantee you will find it new there for 50% to 75% cheaper than any other online or local store (I recently did this and got 1GB new for $18-including shipping!! would have cost $80 thru crucial, newegg, etc). Good luck

    How to troubleshoot this PC?

I changed my busted motherboard for a ASrock 4CoreDual VSTA, then changed my 478 P4 processor for a Pentium D. I have two DDR-333 512MB memory sticks and an NVIDIA 7600gs AGP card. I put everything in place and plug it to a monitor but the screen is just black. No BIOS or anything at all. Tried with a different monitor with the same results. Tested monitor with another PC and it works perfectly. Tried booting with 1 RAM stick or none at all, same results. My case speaker had a broken mole, I used two other different moles to be able to plug them in, but I don't hear any beeps (i hear a couple of pops when I boot). Everything in the case seems to run fine mechanically, all fans spin, DVD-ROM opens. I reset the bios by using jumpers as indicated in the manual, no change. Video card was working on another motherboard right before I changed it (it's almost brand new) I don't believe I damaged any parts with static or anything similar. What else could it be?How to troubleshoot this PC?
it's really hard to say, based on the info you've given...

    1. it's not your monitor

    2. it's not likely the power supply

which leaves us with, cpu, graphic's card and RAM...

the ram that you have is pretty slow, old and it's single channel, this could be your problem...try some other ram, higher speed and ddr2...if I had to guess, I'd say that the RAM is your problem...even so you should be getting beeps from your BIOS to indicate this or some other problem, hence your speaker might be busted or hooked up wrong?

try to use on board video (if your mobo has it)...

    2x check the jumpers

check the cpu and fan...are they seated properly?...do you have too much therm...grease?

    clear the CMOS..battery out...wait 5-10min...switch the clear CMOS jumper...battery back...jumper back...try to boot.

if this doesn't work, repeat but this time download the newest BIOS from the mfg. and flash the bios with a disk or mem-stick after you clear the CMOS.

to really trouble shoot it, you'll have to break it down to bear-bones...disconnect everything but 1 stick of RAM, video card (if no onboard), cpu and fan...just the basics to get into the BIOS...

one by one check all of the DIMM's with one stick and then the other, trying to boot from each after each move...

do you have an, additional power connection for the CPU, 20 or 24 pin main plus another 4,6, or 8 pin right by the cpu for power? How to troubleshoot this PC?
Can you tell if the MB is getting power (lights)? The first trouble shooting signals come through the PC speaker as beeps so if the motherboard and processor are working and getting hung up at a video card you should be hearing beeps from the little PC speaker. Pops do not sound good. If you are not getting a good setup to the PC speaker just disconnect it to make sure it isn't causing a problem. Can you just get a PC speaker from another case? Try reseating everything and remove any add on cards/drives and see what happens. Go completely bare bones and listen to everything to see if it is all hitting and getting power. If it sounds ok add things one at a time and see how it goes. It sucks when you have to wonder about the PC speaker.

    It's a 2003 I think, and for the program I need it to get to work it says the system requirements are: ';ATI Radeon 9800 256MB VRAM or Nvidia 6600 GT with 256MB of VRAM ( Video cards with vertex/pizel shaders 2.x and above are recommended.';

Simply follow the last link to actually install the new card. Can the video card be changed on my Dell Inspiron 5100 and if so how do I do it?
Usually video cards are on the main board of a laptop, and therefore is very difficult to change it without changing the whole main board.

Laptops typically have to sacrifice modularity for a more compact design, and so only a limited amount of devices can be replaced/upgraded (ie. hard drive, ram (the ones that aren't soldered onboard), and probably a couple other devices depending on the laptop.

As for finding out what sound card you have, you can go to your control panel, sounds, then hit the hardware tab. In that tab it should give you some hints to what you have. You can also look up your laptops model online.

I also haven't ever seen any modern sound card that is not compatible with any DirectX, so I doubt you have to worry about that aspect..
you can change video card for Dell Inspiron 5100

I have a computer video problem: Computer is a 466 MHz Celeron with onboard video card.?

Computer was working okay when I shut down, but when I rebooted the next day I got no video. I changed monitors, installed a working PCI graphics card, replaced RAM, removed battery (to reset BIOS) . . . but nothing helped. I've lost onboard video in other computers but was able to install a PCI card to get it back. I have some experience with general computer repair but not with mobo problems. I assume my mobo may be bad, but how do I know for sure? And why did it go so fast?I have a computer video problem: Computer is a 466 MHz Celeron with onboard video card.?
If your computer is not working properly when it is switched on, it could be a problem with device drivers, hardware or software.

Detailed instructions at http://tinyurl.com/yd34ojI have a computer video problem: Computer is a 466 MHz Celeron with onboard video card.?
all thats happened is you video drivers have gotten corrupted

    just reinstall them

    its not a big deal
You can often diagnose any problem at the motherboard level by interpreting the number %26amp; types of beeps the PC generates at bootup.

Please follow this link for details (and make sure your PC speaker ...the internal one...is connected properly):

try starting in SAFE mode if the machine will come up in that then try to re-installing the video drivers..if not again try your add in PCI card but goto the bios and tell it to use the card and not the onboard see if that helps......and does it go thru post ?? if not you may just have a bad motherboard
Its usually visually undetectable when a motherboard goes bad. The only thing you may find to give clues that the board is bad are blown or bluged capactiors. These are the little electrical components that look like tiny soda cans. When they are good and functional the tops will look very flat, but if they are bad, they will be bulged and possibly leaking a fluid out of the top. If you see this anywhere on the board, then it needs to be replaced. But with all you have replaced, I would bet it is bad even if you don't see any bad capactiors. Besides, running a 466MHz celeron indicates that you are due for an upgrade anyway. It may be for the best. Not trying to be personal or rude, but this processor isn't sufficient for most of today's computing needs.
As Kevin ? Gent said, the first probablility is the drivers may need to be re-installed from your ';system'; disc.

As to repairing MOBO. MOST are multilayer, and considered NOT repairable except by the manufacturer. (They usually just replace them unless it is a bad chip!; and it takes test equipment to find the bad part.)

If the MOBO, or system, is still in warranty, contact the manufacturer. (They will want you to return it for repair.)
