How do you change a video file type without corrupting it?

I put my phone's SD card into my computer and was trying to make a movie on Windows Movie Maker and tried to import a video to create the movie, but the movie was the wrong file type. I changed the last few letters (example .3gp to .wmv) of the file and it seemed to work, but when I pressed the ';import a video'; button it said the file ';could not be imported. The selected file is not valid or is corrupted';. Help! How do you change a video file type without corrupting it?
You can't change the extension of the file to convert it. The extension is just a way for your computer to read the type of format the file is in. If you want to change the file type, you have to download a converter. For example, if you wanted to make an .3gp into a .wmv, you could search yahoo/google for ';.3gp to .wmv converter'; then use that. How do you change a video file type without corrupting it?
