How to change a video card?

I am sending in a broken video card to be replaced and have been told that it can take upwards of 2 months to get a new one. I was going to buy a cheap 512 card to bide my time. The question is not how to install or anything of the sort, but whether or not I need to get a similar card. I had a GeForce 8800 gtx and was looking at some cheap Radeon cards. I really don't think it would matter, but I just want to know before I drop $50 on a card. How to change a video card?
Here's a tutorial on card selection and how to install with pictures.

the card has to WANT too change.
You'll just have to uninstall the drivers to your nvidia card, and install the radeons ones.
Open your computer up (shut the power off first) carefully take the card out. Then carefully put the new card in and your done.(turn the power back on)
It wont matter as long as your planning to game on the machine or do any graphics intensive processing ;)

Uninstall your NVidia drivers via control panel , reboot then let it boot into windows again.

sht down , swap your cards (i assume you know how and what precautions to take) then reboot and install the correct drivers , thats it , its easy.

you may have issues though its better always to use a driver cleaner in safe mode to properly uninstall gpu drivers but i wont go into all that now , just download it here http://www.drivercleaner.net/ they have a free version there you dont need to buy it.

use it in safe mode after you uninstall old drivers (boot straight into safemode after being prompted to reboot)

READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FOR DRIVER CLEANER FIRST!!! ;0)
Actually, if all your looking is to drop $50 on a card while you wait for your card to be returned, you shouldn't buy a ATI card.

Changing drivers back and forth between ATI and nvidia isn't a good idea... just stick with one to avoid conflicts. Uninstalling drivers doesn't remove 100% of the gunk, and might cause conflicts with new ati drivers.

I would recommend getting an 8400gs for as little as $20 after rebate just to hold you off. It's not a great card, but personally I wouldn't spend that much on a card while waiting for a rma.

You still have to uninstall your nvidia drivers, but its much less of a headache.
you can visit this website:http://jolleytrails.com/videocard.aspx
