With new video card hard drive stops working.?

Hello, in to my old computer i installed new video card, but when i plug in my external hard drive the computer just hooks up, when i change video cards it works how it worked again, hard drive works just fine, why, what can i do about it?With new video card hard drive stops working.?
OK, give us the good stuff. Forget that the card/drive work on a nother sytem. Forget that the video card etc. That isn't the problem. The problem is the combination of all of that. Put them together on the wrong computer with the wrong cabling, with someone who doesn't know all the ropes, then you can easily have a disaster, a mess.

Technically, the problem you describe is almost certairnly a PSU problem. But ';the problem'; is not whether it works or not. The PSU or the card might work great on your friend's machine. But never in a million yeasr on yours. Yup, it's that bad!

That is why we need more info or, some might try and guess, but nobody wants to give you rediculous or silly answers.

The PSU business is very complicated. Just meeting basic spec for computers s is easy. All you need is a hammer and a nail. But as the video cards get hungrier, the PC board gets hungrier, and both ask a lot more of the PSU, not just in power but in accuracy, the story is getting a lot less clear. To be honest, it's a mess.

PSUs manufacturers are divided into two classes:

Those who lie, and those who say they don't lie.

Fortunately, there are another two classes in their support groups. Those who say they support you, and those who do support you. The next top-best company making PSUs will be the one that gets rid of the liers and leaves us with real people doing good support. I suspect however we are going to get more of the ones we don't want and less of the ones we need.

Good PSUs cost a lot $$, but why pay a lot of $$ if the result is the same or worse than the cheapo companies?

People just have to learn that in some cases their video card will cost as much as their computer (why not, the video card is a lot faster), and that if you want the best, then a PSU can cost more than both together.

Huh? A dumb PSU costs more than my computer and Video card put together???

Yup, unless you want less than the best, that is true. Good PSU technology is VERY expensive.

No, I dont work of them, I don't have any friends with them. But I have designed high end PSUs myself. The best I ever made cost US$5,000 to build one piece in a production run of 10,000. But it was fantastic. Hugely technical, 5 years in the making, and cost a fortune. We sold 7,000,000 of them .Customer unknown. Uncle Sam seemsto have beenimplicated, but no-one will ever know.

So, yup, its sick, but I don't hesitate to check all the specs and pay US$100 for a PSU. If I upgrade my video I'll need more power. And those PSUs are so cheap compared to what I did on my project that it scares me. But I just don't have any spare cash to pay more now. I got out of that biz, wuz tooo painful.

If you can help us, we need:

OS

Hardware details

Video card details, change you made old/new. Any other changes a the same time?

PSU make/part number

Tell us what you did to make sure the power supply was adequate. So we know what you checked and what you didn't check.

Ask a good question, get a good answer. You will, but you need to help. not get huffy.

Don't get upset I go direct, just you are wating time by not getting to the point. You'll get bad answers and you want a good, accurate one.

Everest personal edition will give you all the gen on your computer.. Its free. Search here in answers, the link is all over the place.

CPU-Z and GPU-Z can help you get more info.

The kind of problem you are talking about is history. 100s of thousands of people worldwide are getting **** like that every year. But there are another 8 billion or more who are happy, so the manufacturers don't give a damn.

Not your fault. Just pure capitalism at work. Not nice sometimes.

Do a bit of research yourself. Use the names above to get software. You will really learn a lot about your machine and wher to go to find really wonderful stuff . Then when I get into trouble you might know the answer for me.

So I'll help if I can. Just need more info on the sytem and the problem. Otherwise flying in the dark. With new video card hard drive stops working.?
it can be the power supply :)..
it might be your new video card is drawing too much power.

so when you plug in your external HDD, it does not have enough supply for it.
The power supply is most likely the problem. Just because it works in another computer doesn't mean that they have the same power supply. Go into the bios and divert more power to your mobo.
